J.K. Rowling has deal for new novel for adult

NEW YORK -- Adult fans of J.K. Rowling can rejoice: She has a new novel coming, for grown-ups.

The kids will have to wait and see.

The author of the mega-selling "Harry Potter" series has an agreement with Little, Brown in the United States and Britain to release her first adult novel, the publishers announced Thursday. The title, release date and details about the book, long rumored, were not announced. A neighbor of Ms. Rowling's in Edinburgh, author Ian Rankin, tweeted Thursday that he thinks she has written a mystery novel.





"Wouldn't it be funny if J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults turned out to be a crime story set in Edinburgh?" Mr. Rankin wrote. "My word yes."

Her seventh and final Potter story came out in 2007, and in recent years the British author has said that she was working on an adult book and on a Potter encyclopedia. Ms. Rowling's Potter books, which broke sales records around the world, were published by Bloomsbury in Britain and Scholastic in the U.S. Rowling will now share the same publisher with Stephenie Meyer, whose "Twilight" series at least partially filled the gap opened by the conclusion of the Potter stories.

"Although I've enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series, which has been published so brilliantly by Bloomsbury and my other publishers around the world," Ms. Rowling, 46, said in a statement released by Little, Brown. "The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry's success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life."

Her agent, Neil Blair, would not disclose financial details of the deal but said there had been no auction. He said Thursday that she was remaining with Bloomsbury in Britain for the Harry Potter books.

"As her new book is for a different audience, and marks a new literary direction for her, it made sense to separate the two and for her new book to be launched by a different publisher," said Mr. Blair.

He became Ms. Rowling's literary agent last year when she left the Christopher Little Literary Agency, where he had worked. Bloomsbury said its 15-year relationship with Ms. Rowling "remains stronger than ever" -- and new editions of the seven novels were on the way. Some 450 million copies of the seven Potter stories are in print and the books have been translated into 74 languages. A billion-dollar movie franchise, starring Daniel Radcliffe as the young wizard, ended last year.

"We are pleased to announce that as part of our long term strategy for Harry Potter we intend to publish illustrated editions of all seven Harry Potter books in a rolling program from 2013 onwards in addition to our partnership on e-books with the 'Pottermore' website," the publisher said in a statement. In the U.S., Scholastic spokeswoman Kyle Good noted that Scholastic didn't publish adult books.

"We will continue to publish her children's books in the U.S.," Mr. Good said Thursday.

Any Rowling book would seem a guaranteed million seller, although it's questionable that her new novel will have the same mass appeal as Potter. Adult authors from E.B. White to Sherman Alexie have nicely managed the transition to writing for young people but, once a writer is defined as a children's author, the transition can be tricky. Winnie the Pooh creator A.A. Milne, a successful playwright in his early years, once confessed that he was forced to say "goodbye to all that" after his beloved books about the bear and friends. Margaret Wise Brown, author of the classic "Goodnight Moon," tried for years to write stories for The New Yorker.

Daniel Handler of "Lemony Snicket" fame and Ann Brashares, author of the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" novels, are among the recent popular writers for children who have had limited success as adult writers.

But Ms. Rowling does begin with one advantage: The Potter books had an enormous following among readers of all ages, and she is widely credited with revealing to publishers that children's books were no longer just for the young. Ms. Meyer's vampire novels and Suzanne Collins' "Hunger Games" trilogy also have caught on with both parents and kids. Ms. Meyer herself wrote an adult book, "The Host," a best-seller in 2008.

"It would just be cool if my existing fans liked it," Ms. Meyer told The Associated Press in 2008. "And I hope to get some new readers who would never go into the YA [Young Adult] shelves."

Beth Puffer, director of the Manhattan-based children's bookseller Bank Street Bookstore, said she'd have to see the novel before deciding where or whether to stock it.

"I assume if it's written for adults, it's not appropriate for children," said Ms. Puffer, who added that she might stock the book in a section for ages 14 and up. "There are a lot of former children and young adults who grew up with Harry Potter and they would likely be an audience for her new book. You also have all the adults who loved the Potter books."

One of Ms. Rowling's most passionate fans, Melissa Anelli, said she was beyond herself "with excitement." Ms. Anelli, 32, runs a leading Potter/Rowling fan site, www.the-leaky-cauldron.org.

"J.K. Rowling is simply a great writer, and no matter what she applies her talents to, we will anticipate and enjoy it," Ms. Anelli wrote in an email. "I'm also so intrigued by this process: What will happen as the world's greatest children's/YA author navigates the new publishing landscape and publishes for a new audience?"

Ms. Rowling's novel will be available in both print and electronic formats. The author held out for years on allowing the Potter books to come out digitally but announced in 2011 that Potter e-books would be sold through her own "Pottermore" website. The books were supposed to become available last fall but have been delayed until sometime this year.

NASCAR making money, getting itself back on track

Tony Stewart entered the final race of the 2011 NASCAR season in Homestead, Fla. last November needing a victory to overtake Carl Edwards and capture the season-long Sprint Cup title. A hole in his car’s grille and pit-road problems twice dropped him near the back of the pack. Yet the man known as “Smoke” came roaring back, passing 118 cars and taking the checkered flag, narrowly edging Edwards. Deadlocked in the final standings – a NASCAR first – Stewart took the overall crown thanks to four other victories. It will go down as one of the great performances in racing history.

NASCAR is enjoying a nascent comeback of its own. After a multiyear slide that saw big sponsors and fans abandoning the sport, TV ratings for the season increased 10 percent, attendance at the tracks stabilized and 18 different drivers found the winner’s circle in 2011, one shy of the record. “I’m as optimistic about the business side of this sport as I’ve been in five years,” says Marshall Carlson, president of Hendrick Motorsports, the New York Yankees of the sport.



Much of the optimism derives from the jump in the television audience. NASCAR is still by some measures the second-most-popular TV sport, after the NFL, but average viewership per race peaked at 8.5 million in 2005, according to Nielsen. Then it slid every year for the next half-decade and didn’t reverse course until last year, when 6.5 million viewers watched each race – a needed return to 2009 levels.

As NASCAR prepared to renegotiate its TV rights pacts with Fox, ESPN and Turner this year (they expire in 2014), it was expected to take a massive haircut on its current eight-year, $4.5 billion agreement. Now insiders think the sport can do better – securing a deal that is flat or only slightly lower. Its position got stronger in January, when NASCAR reacquired the rights to its digital business from Turner, after relinquishing them in 2001. “Social media and digital media will help us develop new fans and connect with our existing fans. It is an area we had to have our entire fingerprints on,” says NASCAR Chief Executive Brian France, whose grandfather founded the sport.

Sponsorships, the lifeblood of NASCAR (75 percent of team revenues are derived from them), are creeping back, too. Familiar names like Crown Royal and Red Bull are gone, while brands like Caterpillar, Home Depot and UPS have cut back. But there’s new blood, including Detroit-based Quicken Loans and 5-Hour Energy. Farmers Insurance is the biggest, committing $800,000 per race for 22 races to Kasey Kahne’s No. 5 car, part of the Hendrick stable. “We’re seeing more sponsor activity than we have in three years,” says Zak Brown, founder and head of JMI, which sells and manages motorsports sponsorships.

Danica Patrick will provide additional buzz. After two seasons in NASCAR’s junior Nationwide series she’ll join the Sprint Cup circuit for 10 races starting with the 54th Daytona 500 on Feb. 26, bringing along big-money sponsor Go Daddy and a fan base that made her the most-searched athlete (male or female) on Yahoo! last year.

A rebound in the economy would be nice, too. Only 138,000 fans turned out for the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis last year, down from 270,000 in 2007. Races in Brooklyn, Mich., Concord, N.C. and Talladega, Ala. saw drops of at least 50,000 fans during that time. “We are always disproportionately affected,” says France. “Our fans drive farther, stay longer and use more gasoline.”

NASCAR’s plans to entice them to races include “no-duh” ideas like supporting credit cards and wireless phone service at venues. Many tracks have cut capacity and widened seats from 18 to 22 inches. Charlotte Motor Speedway unveiled the world’s largest high-definition video board last year, measuring 200 feet wide and 80 feet high. Announced attendance at most races was, thankfully, flat and not down in 2011 compared with 2010. “NASCAR is engaged in an arms race with other professional sports for the fan dollar, and it had fallen behind these sports in the live-event experience,” says Christian Alfonsi, head of strategic planning at Taylor, which conducted an independent fan-engagement study for NASCAR last year.

Still, loyalty remains strong, a key selling point for sponsors. “You have very passionate fans that are not just involved in the race but the entire drama of NASCAR,” says Mike Linton, chief marketing officer at Farmers. After the last few years NASCAR is hoping more of that drama takes place on, not off, the track.

Tuntunan shalat sunnah

Shalat-shalat Shunnah.

Sambil nyoba-nyoba upload artikel. Mengingat kita telah memasuki bulan suci Ramadhan 1429 H, maka saya ikut mencoba menyi'arkan salah satu tuntunan ibadah, yaitu shalat sunnah yang berjumlah 15 sebagaimana kita diwajibkan memperbanyak ibadah di bulan Suci ini.
Semoga artikel ini dapat membawa manfaat bagi kita semua. Amin.
Macam shalat sunah adalah :

   1.  Shalat Wudhu, Yaitu shalat sunnah dua rakaat yang bisa dikerjakan setiap selesai wudhu, niatnya :

 Ushalli sunnatal wudlu-I rak’ataini lillahi Ta’aalaa’ artinya : ‘aku niat shalat sunnah wudhu dua rakaat karena Allah’ 

   2.  Shalat Tahiyatul Masjid, yaitu shalat sunnah dua rakaat yang dikerjakan ketika memasuki masjid, sebelum duduk untuk menghormati masjid. Rasulullah bersabda

‘Apabila seseorang diantara kamu masuk masjid, maka janganlah hendak duduk sebelum shalat dua rakaat lebih dahulu’ (H.R. Bukhari dan Muslim). Niatnya :

 ‘Ushalli sunnatal Tahiyatul Masjidi  rak’ataini lillahi Ta’aalaa’ Artinya : ‘aku niat shalat sunnah tahiyatul masjid dua rakaat karena Allah’ 

  3.   Shalat Dhuha. Adalah shalat sunnah yang dikerjakan ketika matahari baru naik. Jumlah rakaatnya minimal 2 maksimal 12. Dari Anas berkata Rasulullah ‘Barang siapa shalat Dhuha 12 rakaat, Allah akan membuatkan untuknya istana disurga’ (H.R. Tarmiji dan Abu Majah). Niatnya :

‘Ushalli sunnatal Dhuha rak’ataini lillahi Ta’aalaa’ Artinya : ‘aku niat shalat sunnah dhuha dua rakaat karena Allah’

 4.   Shalat Rawatib. Adalah shalat sunnah yang dikerjakan mengiringi shalat fardhu. Niatnya :

a.   Qabliyah, adalah shalat sunnah rawatib yang dikerjakan sebelum shalat wajib. Waktunya : 2 rakaat sebelum shalat subuh, 2 rakaat sebelum shalat Dzuhur, 2 atau 4 rakaat sebelum shalat Ashar, dan 2 rakaat sebelum shalat Isya’. Niatnya:

‘Ushalli sunnatadh Dzuhri*  rak’ataini Qibliyyatan lillahi Ta’aalaa’ Artinya: ‘aku niat shalat sunnah sebelum dzuhur dua rakaat karena Allah’

       * bisa diganti dengan shalat wajib yang akan dikerjakan.

b.   Ba’diyyah, adalah shalat sunnah rawatib yang dikerjakan setelah shalat fardhu. Waktunya : 2 atau 4 rakaat sesudah shalat Dzuhur, 2 rakaat sesudah shalat Magrib dan 2 rakaat sesudah shalat Isya. Niatnya :

‘Ushalli sunnatadh Dzuhri*  rak’ataini Ba’diyyatan lillahi Ta’aalaa’ Artinya : ‘aku niat shalat sunnah sesudah  dzuhur dua rakaat karena Allah’

       * bisa diganti dengan shalat wajib yang akan dikerjakan.

   5.  Shalat Tahajud, adalah shalat sunnah pada waktu malam. Sebaiknya lewat tengah malam. Dan setelah tidur. Minimal 2 rakaat maksimal sebatas kemampuan kita. Keutamaan shalat ini, diterangkan dalam Al-Qur’an. ‘Dan pada sebagian malam hari bershalat tahajudlah kamu sebagai suatu ibadah tambahan bagimu. Mudah-mudahan Tuhanmu mengangkatmu ketempat yang terpuji’(Q.S. Al Isra : 79 ). Niatnya :

‘Ushalli sunnatal tahajjudi  rak’ataini lillahi Ta’aalaa’ Artinya : ‘aku niat shalat sunnah tahajjud dua rakaat karena Allah’

   6.  Shalat Istikharah, adalah shalat sunnah dua rakaat untuk meminta petunjuk yang baik, apabila kita menghadapi dua pilihan, atau ragu dalam mengambil keputusan. Sebaiknya dikerjakan pada 2/3 malam terakhir. Niatnya :

‘Ushalli sunnatal Istikharah  rak’ataini lillahi Ta’aalaa’ Artinya : ‘aku niat shalat sunnah Istikharah dua rakaat karena Allah’

   7.  Shalat Hajat, adala shalat sunnah dua rakaat untuk memohon agar hajat kita dikabulkan atau diperkenankan oleh Allah SWT. Minimal 2 rakaat maksimal 12 rakaat dengan salam setiap 2 rakaat. Niatnya :

‘Ushalli sunnatal Haajati  rak’ataini lillahi Ta’aalaa’ Artinya : ‘aku niat shalat sunnah hajat dua rakaat karena Allah’

   8. Shalat Mutlaq, adalah shalat sunnah tanpa sebab dan tidak ditentukan waktunya, juga tidak dibatasi jumlah rakaatnya. ‘Shalat itu suatu perkara yang baik, banyak atau sedikit’ (Al Hadis). Niatnya :

‘Ushalli sunnatal rak’ataini lillahi Ta’aalaa’ Artinya : ‘aku niat shalat sunnah dua rakaat karena Allah’

  9.   Shalat Taubat, adalah shalat sunnah yang dilakukan setelah merasa berbuat dosa kepada Allah SWT, agar mendapat ampunan-Nya. Niatnya:

‘Ushalli sunnatal Taubati  rak’ataini lillahi Ta’aalaa’ Artinya : ‘aku niat shalat sunnah taubat  dua rakaat karena Allah’

  10. Shalat Tasbih, adalah shalat sunnah yang dianjurkan dikerjakan setiap malam, jika tidak bisa seminggu sekali, atau paling tidak seumur hidup sekali. Shalat ini sebanyak empat rakaat, dengan ketentuan jika dikerjakan pada siang hari cukup dengan satu salam, Jika dikerjakan pada malam hari dengan dua salam. Cara mengerjakannya

      Niat :

 ‘Ushalli sunnatan tasbihi raka’ataini lilllahi ta’aalaa’ artinya ‘aku niat shalat sunnah tasbih dua rakaat karena Allah’

  a. Usai membaca surat Al Fatehah membaca tasbih 15 kali.

  b. Saat ruku’, usai membaca do’a ruku membaca tasbih 10 kali

  c. Saat ‘itidal, usai membaca do’a ‘itidal membaca tasbih 10 kali

  d. Saat sujud, usai membaca doa sujud membaca tasbih 10 kali

  e. Usai membaa do’a duduk diantara dua sujud membaca tasbi 10 kali.

  f. Usai membaca doa sujud kedua membaca tasbih 10 kali.

Jumlah keseluruhan tasbih yang dibaca pada setiap rakaatnya sebanyak 75 kali. Lafadz bacaan tasbih yang dimaksud adalah sebagai berikut :

‘Subhanallah wal hamdu lillahi walaa ilaaha illallahu wallahu akbar’ artinya : ‘Maha suci Allah yang Maha Esa. Segala puji bagi Akkah, Dzat yang Maha Agung’.

  11. Shalat Tarawih,  adalah shalat sunnah sesudah shalat Isya’pada bulan Ramadhan. Menegenai bilangan rakaatnya disebutkan dalam hadis. ‘Yang dikerjakan oleh Rasulullah saw, baik pada bulan ramadhan atau lainnya tidak lebih dari sebelas rakaat’ (H.R. Bukhari). Dari Jabir ‘Sesungguhnya Nabi saw telah shallat bersama-sama mereka delapan rakaat, kemudian beliau shalat witir.’ (H.R. Ibnu Hiban)

Pada masa khalifah Umar bin Khathtab, shalat tarawih dikerjakan sebanyak 20 rakaat dan hal ini tidak dibantah oleh para sahabat terkenal dan terkemuka. Kemudian pada zaman Umar bin Abdul Aziz bilangannya dijadikan 36 rakaat. Dengan demikian bilangan rakaatnya tidak ditetapkan secara pasti dalam syara’, jadi tergantung pada kemampuan kita masing-masing, asal tidak kurang dari 8 rakaat. Niat shalat tarawih :

 ‘Ushalli sunnatan Taraawiihi rak’ataini (Imamam/makmuman) lillahi ta’aallaa’ artinya : ‘Aku niat shalat sunat tarawih dua rakaat (imamam/makmum) karena Allah’

  12. Shalat Witir, adalah shalat sunnat mu’akad (dianjurkan) yang biasanya dirangkaikan dengan shalat tarawih, Bilangan shalat witir 1, 3, 5, 7 sampai 11 rakaat. Dari Abu Aiyub, berkata Rasulullah ‘Witir itu hak, maka siapa yang suka mengerjakan lima, kerjakanlah. Siapa yang suka mengerjakan tiga, kerjakanlah. Dan siapa yang suka satu maka kerjakanlah’(H.R. Abu Daud dan Nasai). Dari Aisyah : ‘Adalah nabi saw. Shalat sebelas rakaat diantara shalat isya’ dan terbit fajar. Beliau memberi salam setiap dua rakaatdan yang penghabisan satu rakaat’ (H.R. Bukhari dan Muslim)

‘Ushalli sunnatal witri rak’atan lillahi ta’aalaa’artinya : ‘Aku niat shalat sunnat witir dua rakaat karena Allah’ 

  13. Shalat Hari Raya, adalah shalat Idul Fitri pada 1 Syawal dan Idul Adha pada 10 Dzulhijah. Hukumnya sunat Mu’akad (dianjurkan).’Sesungguhnya kami telah memberi engkau (yaa Muhammad) akan kebajikan yang banyak, sebab itu shalatlah engkau dan berqurbanlah karena Tuhanmu ‘ pada Idul Adha – ‘(Q.S. Al Kautsar.1-2)Dari Ibnu Umar ‘Rasulullah, Abu Bakar, Umar pernah melakukan shalat pada dua hari raya sebelum berkhutbah.’(H.R. Jama’ah). Niat Shalat Idul Fitri :

‘Ushalli sunnatal li’iidil fitri rak’ataini (imamam/makmumam) lillahita’aalaa’ artinya : ‘Aku niat shalat idul fitri dua rakaat (imam/makmum) karena Allah’

Niat Shalat Idul Adha :

‘Ushalli sunnatal li’iidil Adha rak’ataini (imamam/makmumam) lillahita’aalaa’ artinya : ‘Aku niat shalat idul adha dua rakaat (imam/makmum) karena Allah

Waktu shalat hari raya adalah setelah terbit matahari sampai condongnya matahari. Syarat, rukun dan sunnatnya sama seperti shalat yang lainnya. Hanya ditambah beberapa sunnat sebagai berikut:

a.  Berjamaah

b.   Takbir tujuh kali pada rakaat pertama, dan lima kali pada rakat kedua

c.     Mengangkat tangan setinggi bahu pada setiap takbir.

d.     Setelah takbir yang kedua sampai takbir yang terakhir membaca tasbih.

e.      Membaca surat Qaf dirakaat pertama dan surat Al Qomar di rakaat kedua.

      Atau surat A’la dirakat pertama dan surat Al Ghasiyah pada rakaat kedua.

f.         Imam menyaringkan bacaannya.

g.        Khutbah dua kali setelah shalat sebagaimana khutbah jum’at

h.         Pada khutbah Idul Fitri memaparkan tentang zakat fitrah dan pada Idul

        Adha tentang hukum-hukum Qurban.

i.            Mandi, berhias, memakai pakaian sebaik-baiknya.

j.            Makan terlebih dahulu pada shalat Idul Fitri pada Shalat Idul Adha

        sebaliknya.

  14. Shalat Khusuf, adalah shalat sunat sewaktu terjadi gerhana bulan atau matahari. Minimal dua rakaat. Caranya mengerjakannya :

  a.                Shalat dua rakaat dengan 4 kali ruku’ yaitu pada rakaat pertama, setelah ruku’ dan I’tidal membaca fatihah lagi kemudian ruku’ dan I’tidal kembali setelah itu sujud sebagaimana biasa. Begitu pula pada rakaat kedua.

  b.               Disunatkan membaca surat yang panjang, sedang membacanya pada waktu gerhana bulan harus nyaring sedangkan pada gerhana matahari sebaliknya.

Niat shalat gerhana bulan :

‘Ushalli sunnatal khusuufi rak’ataini  lillahita’aalaa’ artinya : ‘Aku niat shalat gerhana bulan  dua rakaat  karena Allah’

  15. Shalat Istiqa’,adalah shalat sunat yang dikerjakan untuk memohon hujan kepada Allah SWT. Niatnya ‘

‘Ushalli sunnatal Istisqaa-I  rak’ataini (imamam/makmumam) lillahita’aalaa’ artinya : ‘Aku niat shalat istisqaa dua rakaat (imam/makmum) karena Allah’

Syarat-syarat mengerjakana Shalat Istisqa :

a.                  Tiga hari sebelumnya agar ulama memerintahkan umatnya bertaobat dengan berpusa dan meninggalkan segala kedzaliman serta menganjurkan beramal shaleh. Sebab menumpuknya dosa itu mengakibatkan hilangnya rejeki dan datangnya murka Allah. ‘Apabila kami hendak membinasakan suatu negeri, maka lebih dulu kami perbanyak orang-orang yang fasik, sebab kefasikannyalah mereka disiksa, lalu kami robohkan (hancurkan) negeri mereka sehancur-hancurnya’(Q.S. Al Isra’ : 16).

b.                  Pada hari keempat semua penduduk termasuk yang lemah dianjurkan pergi kelapangan dengan pakaian sederana dan tanpa wangi-wangian untuk shalat Istisqa’

c.                 Usai shalat diadakan khutbah dua kali. Pada khutbah pertama hendaknya membaca istigfar 9 X dan pada khutbah kedua 7 X.

Pelaksanaan khutbah istisqa berbeda dengan khutbah lainnya, yaitu :

a.                   Khatib disunatkan memakai selendang.

b.                  Isi khutbah menganjurkan banyak beristigfar, dan berkeyakinan bahwa Allah SWT akan mengabulkan permintaan mereka.

c.                  Saat berdo’a hendaknya mengangkat tangan setinggi-tingginya. 

Saat berdo'a pada khutbah kedua, khatib hendaknya menghadap kiblat membelakangi makmumnya

Mardi Gras 2012: Fat Tuesday Celebrations Include Harry Connick Jr., Cindy Lauper (PHOTOS)

NEW ORLEANS — Revelers hit the streets Tuesday to celebrate Mardi Gras, lured to the French Quarter and stately oak-lined avenues by the chance to snag beads and baubles from seemingly endless parades in the final unfettered party before the somber season of Lent.
The French Quarter was full of costumed revelers. Wearing a bright orange wig, a purple mask and green shoes, New Orleans resident Charlotte Hamrick walked along Canal Street to meet friends.
"I'll be in the French Quarter all day," Hamrick said. "I don't even go to the parades. I love to take pictures of all the costumes and just be with my friends. It's so fun."
Brittany Davies of Denver was struggling through the early morning hours. Still feeling the effects of heavy drinking from the night before, her friends had her out again early Tuesday.
"They're torturing me," Davies joked. "But I'll be OK after a bloody Mary."
At the Superdome, the predominantly African-American Zulu krewe loaded their floats with their signature decorated coconuts, a parade crowd favorite. Most were in the traditional black-face makeup and afro wigs krewe members have sported for decades.
Meanwhile in the Garden District, clarinetist Pete Fountain prepared to lead his Half-Fast Walking Club on its annual march down St. Charles Avenue, the traditional start of the daylong series of parades.
After Zulu, the parade of Rex, king of Carnival, would make the trek down the avenue and to the city's business district, with hundreds of thousands of people pleading for beads and doubloons.
Fountain, 82, gave a "thumbs up" to start off and his band launched into "When The Saints Come Marching In" as they rounded the corner onto St. Charles Avenue shortly after 7 a.m. It was the 52nd time that Fountain's group has paraded for Mardi Gras. This year, the group wore bright yellow suits and matching pork pie hats for its theme, "Follow the Yellow Brick Road."
Along St. Charles, groups of people, many in costumes, breakfasted as children played in the street. Small marching groups were already on the move. The Skeleton Krewe, 25 people dressed in black skeleton outfits, were on their way to the St. Louis Cathedral.
Tom White, 46, clad in a pink tu-tu, bicycled down the avenue with his wife, Allison, on their way to the French Quarter. "I'm the pink fairy this year," said White. Allison White was not in costume. "He's disgraced the family enough," she said of her husband.
But Tom White was in the spirit of the day. "Costuming is the real fun of Mardi Gras. I'm not too creative but when you weigh 200 pounds and put on a tu-tu people still take your picture."
The stakeout for prime spots along the Mardi Gras parade route started Monday, with legions of Carnival die-hards jockeying for the best places to vie for beads thrown from floats on Fat Tuesday.
Stephanie Chapman and her family had set up in their usual spot on the St. Charles streetcar tracks. They'd arrive at 4 a.m. on Tuesday and would be staying for the duration. "This is a beautiful day and we'll be here until it's over. It won't rain on my parade, But if it does I won't pay any attention," she said.
Across the Gulf Coast, Mardi Gras was getting into full swing. In the Cajun country of southwest Louisiana, masked riders were preparing to go from town to town, making merry along the way in the Courir du Mardi Gras. And parades were scheduled elsewhere around Louisiana and on the Mississippi and Alabama coasts. The celebration arrived in Louisiana in 1682 when the explorer LaSalle and his party stopped at a place they called Bayou Mardi Gras south of New Orleans to celebrate. The site is now lost to history.
On Monday night, the Lundi Gras celebration culminated with the parade of the Krewe of Orpheus, led by entertainers Harry Connick Jr. and Hilary Swank. Rocker Bret Michaels and Grammy-winning singer Cyndi Lauper ushered in Mardi Gras with musical performances in the wee hours of the morning at the bash that followed the parade.
Revelers in costume danced and posed for pictures with Mardi Gras Indians wearing elaborate costumes with feathers and beads.
The end of Mardi Gras gives way to the beginning of Lent, the period of fasting and repentance before Easter Sunday.

Recipe for KING CAKE

Nothing says Mardi Gras like king cake! (Okay... nothing that doesn't involve nudity and booze.) In case you're not familiar with the flavorful and often colorful dessert, it's a traditional cake served in New Orleans and throughout southern Louisiana during the Carnival season -- particularly on Fat Tuesday.

Included somewhere in the cake is a "baby" - either a bean, a pecan, or an actual plastic/ceramic trinket. The person who gets the slice with the baby is King or Queen of the day -- and has to supply the cake at the next gathering. In some circles, it implies that the person who gets the baby will be the next person to have a child.

We're quite TV-obsessed here at Zap2it, so it should come as no surprise that our favorite recipes for king cake come from Food Network chefs. Here we've included the best recipe, from Food Network fave Emeril Lagasse from his show "Emeril Live." Be warned, this isn't a quick stop in the kitchen. King cake may look like fun and games, but it requires some serious work!

Ingredients

    1/2 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees)
    2 packages dry yeast
    2 teaspoons sugar
    4 to 5 cups flour
    1/2 cup sugar
    2 teaspoons salt
    1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
    1/2 cup warm milk (105 to 115 degrees)
    1/2 cup melted unsalted butter, cooled
    5 egg yolks
    1/2 cup finely chopped candied citron
    1 pecan half, uncooked dried bean or King Cake Baby

Glaze:

    2 cups sifted powdered sugar
    2 tablespoons lemon juice
    2 tablespoons water
    Purple, green and gold sugar crystals


Preheat the oven 350 degrees. Combine the warm water, yeast and 2 teaspoons sugar in a small bowl. Mix well and set aside to a warm place for about 10 minutes. Combine the 4 cups of flour, 1/2 cup sugar, salt, nutmeg, lemon rind and add warm milk, melted butter, egg yolks and yeast mixture. Beat until smooth. Turn dough out on a lightly floured surface. Knead in enough remaining flour until the dough is no longer sticky. Continue kneading until the dough is smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes). Place the dough in a well-greased bowl. Turn once so greased surface is on top.

Cover the dough and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk (about 1 1/2 hours). Punch the dough down and place on a lightly floured surface. Sprinkle with the citron and knead until the citron is evenly distributed. Shape the dough into a cylinder, about 30 inches long. Place the cylinder on a buttered baking sheet. Shape into a ring, pinching ends together to seal. Place a well-greased 2-pound coffee can or shortening can in the center of the ring to maintain shape during baking. Press the King Cake Baby, pecan half or dried bean into the ring from the bottom so that it is completely hidden by the dough. Cover the ring with a towel, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes.

Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove the coffee can immediately. Allow the cake to cool. For the glaze: Combine the ingredients and beat until smooth. To assemble, drizzle cake with the glaze. Sprinkle with sugar crystals, alternating colors. Cut into the cake and hope you do not get the baby.

 If you need a friend to celebrate Fat Tuesday with, Jake Tortorice suggests you get a king cake.
"You should see people start following me when I bring a king cake into an office," said Tortorice, the owner of Rao's Bakery. "I make a lot of new friends doing that."
The famous symbol of Mardi Gras usually means there are good times to be had - long before and even after today's Fat Tuesday celebrations.
Market Basket and Kroger have been selling king cakes for the past several weeks and Tortorice said his company started making and shipping king cakes back in December and plan to keep it up for at least another week.
In that time, he estimates they've shipped about 1,500 king cakes - not to mention the ones that are selling in the stores.
From New York to California, Connecticut to Georgia and hundreds of places in between, Southeast Texans who have transplanted to other parts of the state and country or locals who have far flung families want to be able to laissez les bon temps roulette (let the good time roll), and they need a traditional Mardi Gras cake to do so.
Others, though, aren't really sure what they'll be getting when they order a king cake.
"Someone told me they thought it was a big donut with jelly in it," said Kristin Baker, who is in charge of shipping the cakes for Rao's.
The cakes are actually more similar to large cinnamon rolls and come in a variety of flavors and typically are iced with the purple, green and gold colors of Mardi Gras.
Tortorice is especially proud of his new Voodoo king cake, which has chocolate icing.
No matter the flavor, the thing you'll always find in your cake is a baby - a good luck symbol which means you're the king or queen for the day.
Traditionally, the one who finds the baby also is supposed to buy the next king cake.
"It's a fun time," Tortorice said. "When I bring them to customers, you'd think I was bringing gold."
Well, purple, green and gold.

Memulai belajar java

Di akhir2 masa kuliah ini sebenernya pengen banget mempelajari macem-macem..tapi karena waktu dan tenaga terbatas terpaksa kudu menentukan pilihan. Diantara pilihan Java, .NET, C++, aku coba2 mulai mempelajari Java lebih lanjut, di sela2 ngerjain skripsi.. (mudah2an gak angin2an..bosenan sih, :-p huehe).. Alasan milih java polos aja.. pengen bisa bikin aplikasi bwat hp..
Sebenarnya ini bukan pertama kalinya aku menyentuh java.. Saat kuliah OOP di kampus bahasa pengantarnya juga java. Cuman sekedar tau kulitnya aja..
Nah bahasa udah ditentukan, selanjutnya adalah memilih IDE (integrated development environment).. kalo nulis di notepad ya jelas ogah.. Dulu pas kuliah aku pake editor java bernama Gel. bagus.. tapi sekarang butuh fasilitas lebih yang lebih memanjakan.. dan tentunya gratis atu open-source
Nah yang bikin tambah bingung nentuin pilihan, aku baru tau kalo ternyata urusan IDE di Java ini ada dua kubu gede.. yaitu Eclipse vs NetBeans.. yang masing2 pemakainya terlihat sangat fanatik pula..
Eclipse terasa lebih cepat dan enteng ketimbang Netbeans.. (Netbeans menuntut RAM setidaknya 512 MB!).. tapi dari sisi tampilan, aku lebih suka Netbeans yang menurutku lebih simple..
Kedua IDE ini sama2 berupa aplikasi Java yang dijalankan dengan JRE. Perbedaan yang mendasar adalah: Eclipse memakai SWT toolkit untuk membangun GUI nya, sedangkan NetBeans memakai Swing.. Bicara antara Eclipse dan netBeans tidak bisa dipisahkan dari perdebatan topik SWT vs swing, mengingatkan pada GNOME dan KDE yang lekat dengan GTK+ vs Qt :-).
SWT dan swing adalah widget toolkit (pustaka pembangun GUI/tampilan), yang dibikin dengan konsep yang berbeda, oleh pihak yang berbeda..
Swing menggambar elemen GUI menggunakan pustaka grafis milik java. Artinya button, textbox, listbox, dan komponen lainnya adalah dirender oleh java meniru semirip2 nya tampilan GUI milik sistem operasi.. Ini berbeda dengan implementasi SWT yang memang benar2 mengakses GUI aseli milik sistem operasi.
Dari penjelasan singkat diatas, SWT terlihat lebih cepat (karena memanfaatkan native GUI), sedangkan swing walaupun lebih portable karena murni java, membutuhkan waktu tersendiri untuk menggambar simulasi GUI..
Untuk mana yang lebih cepat, ternyata masih menjadi perdebatan tersendiri.. apakah SWT memang lebih cepat dari swing? apakah dalam hal tertentu swing lebih cepat daripada SWT.. atau sebaliknya, Yang jelas terasa saat aku mencoba menjalankan Eclipse 3.2 dan NetBeans 5.5.1.. Di Windows, Eclipse terasa lebih responsif..
teknologinya terus berkembang.. mudah2an NetBeans berikutnya semakin kencang..
Sebenarnya aku lebih condong ke Eclipse, mengapa? karena selain kenceng saat dicoba, Eclipse adalah IDE universal.. Dari definisi di Wikipedia, tertulis Eclipse is an open-source software framework written primarily in Java. In its default form it is a Java IDE.. Karena pada distribusi standarnya, Eclipse menyertakan JDT (Java Development Tools) dan kompiler Java.. terdapat macem2 plug-in untuk pengembangan lainnya mulai dari C/C++,PHP, Ruby, sampe ActionScript..
Nah kebetulan aku suka berurusan ama PHP dan ActionScript.. akan menyenangkan banget kalo semuanya bisa dikembangkan dalam 1 IDE .(^_^)/ tak perlu pindah2 program, editing di lingkungan yang sama, shortcut yang seragam, dan hal2 manis lain2..
Yang aku suka lagi, Eclipse ini adalah program portable, gak perlu diinstall.. gak mengotori sistem..bisa ditaruh dimana aja..bisa dipindah2..
Kelihatannya bisa segera menggantikan PHPEdit ama SE|PY yang selama ini aku pake..
Untuk development PHP, bisa install plug-in eclipse bernama PHPEclipse atau PDT.. Yang kedua keliatannya lebih menjanjikan..
Untuk development flash-actionscript, bisa menginstall plug-in ASDT.. Dalam hal ini, ada istilah yang namanya FAME, yaitu lingkungan pengembangan aplikasi Flash tanpa perlu Flash IDE sama sekali.. dan free.. FAME kepanjangan dari Flashout, ASDT, MTASC dan Eclipse.. jika ditambah Swfmill menjadi FAMES..

Kembali ke Eclipse untuk Java.. Jika mendownload dari situsnya, kita mendapatkan Eclipse masih polos..maka kita perlu nambah plug-in sesuai kebutuhan.. Misalnya untuk pengembangan J2ME, butuh plug-in EclipseME.. Untuk editing visual kayak Delphi, butuh plugin Visual Editor (VE).. Oiya gak semua plug-in gratisan..
Nah hal2 diatas bikin rada repot..
Akhirnya beralih ke NetBeans.. Kebetulan pernah pesen CD gratisnya dan dapet NetBeans 5.5.1 plus Mobility Pack nya (untuk develop aplikasi mobile)..
Pake NetBeans, semua kebutuhanku udah tersedia.. Tinggal install dapet semua deh, dengan mobility pack, gak perlu download+install Wireless Toolkit..
Karena alasan2 itu akhirnya pake NetBeans, sesuai tujuan semula, yaitu belajar J2ME. Di NetBeans, udah ada visual editor untuk bikin aplikasi ponsel.. wuiks.. tapi karena aku mulainya banyak berkutat di kelas Canvas, maka fasilitas canggih ini belum kepake..

dengan cara klik kanan lalu extract to PvPGN-1.8.5-0-Win32-SQLite-3.6.11-BIN
setelah di dapat hasil extract masuk ke folder tersebut dan copykan folder pvpgn-1.8.5 ke C:/
lalu rename atau rubah namanya menjadi pvpgn
lalu extract juga file pvpgn-support-1.2.zip
ambil file di dalam folder pvpgn-support-1.2 kemudian salin/kopikan kedalam
C:\pvpgn\files
setelah itu kita masuk ke folder C:\pvpgn
karena kita hanya akan menjalankan server dota saja maka tidak perlu klik install.bat
kita cukup doble klik file PvPGNConsole.exe
setelah itu maka akan tampil layar hitam console. dan jika kita baca akan tertulis bahwa server kita sudah running. untuk screeshot gambarnya seperti berikut.

untuk testing enable kan feature irc servernya. ada di bnetd.conf baris 518
kurang lebih seperti ini. kondisikan sesuai ip yang anda punya.

Menjadi affiliate sama saja dengan kita melamar menjadi sales pada sebuah perusahaan yang menjual barang produksi kebutuhan konsumen. Artinya kita ikut memasarkan dan menjual barang milik perusahaan tersebut dan jika kita berhasil menjual barang, maka kita akan dapat komisi persentase dari hasil penjualan tadi. Besar kecilnya komisi tergantung kebijakan masing masing perusahaan. Semakin banyak barang kita jual maka semakin banyak pula komisi yang akan kita terima. Tapi yang harus diingat adalah jika melamar pada sebuah perusahaan biasanya memerlukan segala macam syarat. Ya ijazah lha, surat pengalaman kerja, surat kelakuan baik dan segala macam yang harus kita penuhi agar bisa menjadi karyawan di perusahaan yang kita inginkan. Lalu setelah kita mengajukan surat lamaran tinggal menunggu panggilan apakah kita diterima atau tidak. Kalau diterima enak, jika tidak ya gigit jari he he he.

Bagaimana kalau menjadi affiliate Amazon? Sulit nggak ya? Menjadi affiliate Amazon tentu saja sangat gampang. Untuk menjadi karyawan yang menjual produk Amazon, anda hanya memerlukan alamat email, bisa mengetik dan bisa internetan. Itu saja. Anda tidak usah susah-susah bawa surat lamaran dan bawa surat pengalaman kerja. Tidak usah menunggu beberapa minggu untuk menjadi karyawan seperti layaknya melamar di perusahaan-perusahaan. Menjadi affiliate Amazon langsung diterima dan pasti. Ah masaknya, gampang sekali ya….? Lha emang iya kok. Bagaimana cara menjadi reseller atau affiliate Amazon? Oke saya jabarkan dengan singkat karena melamar kerja menjadi karyawan Amazon memang sangat singkat. Ikuti aja caranya di bawah dalam jangka waktu 5 menit langsung akan diterima. He he he.

1. Silahkan buka www.amazon.com
2. Setelah terbuka webnya, scroll ( gulung ) ke bawah. Cari link yang bertuliskan Join Assosiate.
3. Isi data-data yang diminta dengan lengkap sesuai KTP termasuk juga alamat email.
4. Beres lalu login. Kalau sudah bisa login, berarti anda sudah resmi menjadi reseller dan affiliate Amazon.

Langkah selanjutnya adalah bagaimana menjual produk Amazon agar kita bisa mendapatkan komisi dari hasil penjualan kita. Jika anda telah mahir dengan bahasa Inggris, tinggal login aja dan lihat menu-menu yang ada di dalamnya. Otak atik aja biar lebih familiar dengan member area Amazon. 

setting eclipse for Flash Development

This guide explains how to set up a Flash and Flex development environment with Eclipse, FDT, Flash Builder and a couple of other editors that you want for ActionScript coding and Flash development with style! This guide is based on Windows because that’s what I’m using but I’m sure you Mac and Linux guys can figure out the parts that differ on your OS! Let’s get started …

INGREDIENTS

• Java Runtime – In case you don’t have it installed yet. Choose either the Standard Java Runtime from Sun or  – my recommendation – the JRockit Runtime from Oracle. The latter is a highly optimized version of the Java Runtime. It’s free but you have to register an account at Oracle to download it.
• Eclipse Platform Runtime Binary – We want the bare bones version without all the additional junk. We’re going to add the stuff we need later. Don’t worry! It’ll be a smooth ride if you follow this guide.
• Powerflasher FDT – The best tool for ActionScript coding … with a price tag! But you don’t want to skimp on professional tools for professional work, do you?! We’re going to install this from within Eclipse later!
• Flash Builder PlugIn – I’d list this as optional since the only advantage of it over FDT is currently it’s visual editor. You don’t want to code ActionScript in this once you’ve used FDT, believe me!
• Other Eclipse PlugIns: HTML-, JavaScript-, XML-, CSS- Editors, Apache Ant (via JDT). These are all tools we need every now and then. Gratifyingly, the Eclipse project provides excellent versions of all these.
• Even more Eclipse PlugIns: Subclipse and Mylyn. Both optional! Subclipse for accessing SVN repositories and Mylyn as a great coding task tool. Both get installed later via Eclipse.

Other Tools you might need/want:

• Flex SDK – FDT ships with it’s own Flex SDK but they are usually a step behind the latest version so I prefer to use SDKs that stand on their own regardless of what FDT ships. Be sure to pick the ‘Adobe Flex SDK’, not the ‘Open Source Flex SDK’ since that one is missing a few things. Also you might want to have several different SDKs installed like for example Flex 3.x and Flex 4 which you can target individually from FDT. If you want to use Ant build files later to build your projects it’s a good idea to place the SDKs in a clean and easy folder hierarchy, e.g. let’s say I have Flex SDK 3.5 and 4.0 on my system then I would put them under C:\Users\username\Applications\FlexSDK\3.5.0 and C:\Users\username\Applications\FlexSDK\4.0.0. I remember having trouble with spaces in path names when I experimented with Alchemy hence I decided to not put the SDKs into a subfolder in ‘Program Files’.
• Flash Player Runtimes – Debug versions, release versions, browser plugins and whatnot. I typically disregard all the versions that come with any Flex SDK or Flash IDE and copy the newest version into a folder that always stays the same (for example C:/Program Files/Adobe/Flash Player/Debug/FlashPlayer.exe and C:/Program Files (x86)/Adobe/Flash Player/Release/FlashPlayer.exe) because it can get messy if you have X different SDK versions plus the Flash IDE, plus Flash Builder etc. installed that all come with their own runtimes.
• Adobe AIR – because Flash development would be only half the fun without it!
• Adobe Flash – The ol’ Flash IDE. If you code with this you will become impotent but it’s still great for putting visual assets together and use these as SWC’s with FDT.
• Alcon – My own little debugging and logging tool. There’s a good choice of similar loggers out there but Alcon still serves me well. Suit yourself.

INSTALLATION

1. Java Runtime
   This should be straightforward! Choose the one you prefer from the links above and install. If you go for the JRockit one, you might want to set an environment variable (under Windows) named JAVA_HOME that points to your JRockit runtime path. For example I have my JRockit installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jrrt, (under Windows 7) open the Start menu, from there navigate to Control Panel/System and Security/System, click the Advanced system settings link on the left of the window, in the System Properties dialog click the Environment Variables button, then click the New… button under System variables and enter JAVA_HOME as the Variable name and C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jrrt\jre (in my example) as the Variable value. You might have to reboot or at least relogin for this setting to take effect.
2. Eclipse
   Download the Eclipse Platform Runtime Binary (currently v3.5.2, ~47MB) and unpack it. Copy the Eclipse folder to where you like, typically something like  C:\Program Files\Eclipse but I prefer to have my installation under C:\Users\username\Applications\Eclipse. The reason for this is that under Windows with UAC turned on Eclipse will create an additional folder in your user location where it stores all your installed PlugIns so you end up with two locations in that things get installed. This led to discrepancies more than once for me before due to ambiguous PlugIn installs. Very, very annoying so eventually I decided to keep it simple and have it in a non-UAC protected location.  The C:\Users\username\Applications folder is my place for all applications that have trouble with UAC.
   Either way, you have your Eclipse where you want it, next step is to edit the eclipse.ini. Your default eclipse.ini will look similar to this:

   If you don’t use JRockit you can skip the first line, if you do use JRockit you need to adapt the first line to point to your JRockit jawaw.exe!
   The -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=10, -XX:MaxPermSize=128m, -XX:PermSize=64m and -XX:+UseParallelGC lines are not mandatory but they improve performance (or so I’ve heard!). Just be sure to set Xms and Xmx high enough, to at least 128 and 512, but better 1024 (Eclipse and FDT need LOADS of RAM!).
   Next fire up Eclipse and choose your Workspace location. Eclipse will present itself with its nice and warm intro screen …
   
3. JDT & Ant
   Click through to the Workbench (the arrow on the right) and from the menu choose Help/Install New Software… then in the Install window  where it says “Work with:” choose the Galileo update site (Galileo – http://download.eclipse.org/releases/galileo) and in the tree list that shows up, unfold the Programming Languages branch and check Eclipse Java Development Tools. Then click the Next button and follow the install procedure. Restart Eclipse when it asks you to do so after the installation.
   
4. HTML-, JavaScript-, XML- and CSS- Editors
   This is the exact same procedure as in step 3 with the difference that you unfold the Web, XML, and Java EE Development category and check the Eclipse Web Developer Tools, Eclipse XML Editors and Tools and the JavaScript Developer Tools.
   
5. Subclipse
   Next things next! For Subclipse we need to add the update URL to Eclipse. Open The Eclipse Install window again, click the Add… button and enter Subclipse 1.6 as the name and http://subclipse.tigris.org/update_1.6.x as the location (or you might wanna check the official Subclipse site for any newer update URLs) …
   … Hit OK and choose the required Subclipse components from the tree list. You need at least the parts that are marked as required but I also pick Integration for Mylyn, the SVNKit Library, SVNKit Client Adapter and the JNA Library. Can’t hurt to have them on board! After that click Next ansd from there on the procedure is very much the same as before with step 3 and 4.
   
6. Mylyn
   We can install Mylyn and all its dependencies again from the Galileo update site just as above under step 3 and 4. You’ll find Mylyn in the Collaboration category. I’ll go for Mylyn Task List, Mylyn Task-Focused Interface, Mylyn WikiText and Mylyn Bridge: Eclipse IDE. There are some other bridges for other Languages if you want them but since FDT has no support for Mylyn yet there’s nothing for ActionScript. However we can still put Mylyn to good use for our ActionScript programming, we just don’t get the same task-focused integration as with Java or C++.
   
7. FDT
   Time to install the FDT trial! We need to enter the update site just as with Subclipse in step 5. For the update site enter FDT as name and http://fdt.powerflasher.com/update/ as the location (or check the Powerflasher website in case the URL changed). Pick the FDT version(s) that you want to install from the tree list, hit Next and go drink a coffee! Installing FDT will take a couple of minutes. Don’t forget to restart Eclipse after install!
   
8. Flash Builder PlugIn
   At last we install Flash Builder! This step is wholly optional! If you don’t have any use for Flash Builder’s visual editor I actually recommend to skip this step and instead enjoy a more lightweight Eclipse without Flash Builder.
   Head over to Adobe and download the Flash Builder PlugIn trial version (at the time of this writing it’s the Flash Builder 4 beta 2 which can be found at the Adobe Labs). You might be required to register at Adobe to download the trial.
   Next quit your Eclipse and start the downloaded Flash Builder installer. Go through the installation steps and when it asks for the Eclipse install choose Plug into another copy of Eclipse and enter the path to your freshly prepared Eclipse location …
   … continue the installation, then go drink another coffee, installing Flash Builder takes long!
9. Bonus Step
   Download this slick Splash screen and replace the unlucky default Eclipse Splash screen with it by copying it to your Eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.platform_x.x.xxx… folder.
